Vic Bearcroft
Our first winter demonstration was by Zoom and given by Vic Bearcroft. He showed us how to usescribbling to make a picture of an elephant’s head and trunk. On an ordinary A4 sheet of paper and with a sharp pencil he began by planning the position of thehead and trunk using quick circular scribbles to place the animal. He stressed that we should usethe side of the point of the pencil, not the point, to achieve a light effect. Then he went on to buildup the shape of the trunk, followed by the shadows under the trunk and away from the light, usingthe same circular movements but making them smaller and smaller as the shading deepened, ormoving the paper so that the circles went in different directions.Using a similar loose circle shape we built up the lower and upper face, the head and the ears. Thistechnique eventually gave us a good picture of the elephant’s head. Still using the side of the pencillead, we could build up the deeper shadows on the neck and to pick out the ears and the mouthproviding a realistic picture of the animal.A fun evening!
